Communications Associate

The Nightingale-Bamford School

The Nightingale-Bamford School seeks candidates for the position of communications associate to support the communications operations of the school. This role will have a particular focus on social media and project management. An integral member of the communications team, the communications associate will report directly to the director of communications and work collaboratively with the director, associate director, and events coordinator, as well as the advancement department and other faculty and staff of Nightingale. This position offers candidates valuable experience in non-profit communications and strategic marketing, as well as exciting opportunities for professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Communications Support

  • Create written content for school publications and communications (print and digital) as requested by director and associate director
    • Provide content on a weekly basis to associate director for the school’s parent newsletter, Next at Nightingale
    • Write articles for the school’s magazine, Blue Doors (published biannually)
  • Photograph and/or video school events, as needed
  • Assist with editing of print publications (such as forms, handbooks, newsletters, flyers, programs, magazine, etc.)
    • Draft and/or proof content as requested by director and associate director
  • Monitor school’s image in the press and online, and assist with coordination of media outreach and marketing
  • Manage the school’s archives
    • Coordinate upkeep of files with the school’s professional archivists
    • Support the school’s ongoing history project as needed

Social Media

  • Manage school’s social media presence (including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds), stay informed of trends in use of social media by non-profits, and incorporate best practices
    • Visit classrooms and attend school events on a daily basis to take pictures and write content for social media posts that highlight the school’s mission and programs
    • Solicit submissions from teachers and other staff members
    • Monitor comments and reactions to social media and respond as necessary
    • Track analytics and prepare reports that detail user engagement with school’s social media feeds
    • Coordinate efforts with development team on use of social media in fundraising initiatives
  • Support the execution of school’s alumnae communications plans by managing alumnae Facebook and LinkedIn groups
    • Work with director of alumnae relations to develop strategic goals and action steps for the school’s online alumnae communications efforts
    • Create and post content for alumnae-specific social media feeds
    • Approve member requests for private alumnae Facebook and LinkedIn groups
    • Monitor activity on alumnae social media feeds and respond as necessary

Project Management

  • Assist with the execution of the school’s strategic marketing plan by assuming the role of project lead on necessary projects, as assigned by director of communication
    • Work with director of communications to identify key tasks and necessary team members
    • Develop timelines for task completion
    • Coordinate roles and responsibilities of project team members
    • Secure necessary resources
    • Use department’s project management software, Asana, to ensure transparency and manage execution of tasks
    • Track project budgets and submit relevant reports and statements to business office
    • Prepare progress reports and conduct debriefs as requested
    • Work with director to establish routine evaluation of projects after completion


  • Chaperone field trips, as needed and available
  • Other duties as assigned by the director of communications and/or head of school

Preferential consideration will be given to candidates with the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Interest/experience in journalism
  • Interest/experience in photography and/or videography
  • Interest/experience in graphic design
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Blackbaud products, Finalsite, and/or Asana
  • Familiarity with independent schools
  • Ability to interact with a range of constituents (alumnae, parents, faculty, students)
  • Willingness to join a collaborative team that serves a wide variety of roles
  • Flexibility in the face of unanticipated tasks and/or changing priorities
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn new skills
  • High level of initiative, proven ability to work independently, good time-management skills, and ability to work within tight deadlines
