Lower School Spanish Curriculum Designer/Lead FLES Teacher

The Nightingale-Bamford School seeks a dynamic teacher and curriculum designer for a Spanish-language, Lower School FLES + content program. The ideal candidate will be able to work across academic departments and within the Lower School to division to define and teach to a new approach to language learning in the Lower School. The development of the new FLES + content program will take place in coordination with the Head of modern languages and will provide a creative opportunity for the FLES lead teacher, who will be expected to collaborate with colleagues in modern languages and Lower School faculty to craft meaningful situations that maximize language learning potential. With the help of the technology department, the FLES lead teacher will plan age-appropriate lessons for Lower School language class as well as find creative ways to relate language learning to the overall educational experience of every Lower School student. The hope is that this new language program will become a meaningful and integrated part of each student’s discovery and inquiry. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of elementary language pedagogy and a passion for working with students at the Lower School level. The FLES lead teacher must be responsive to faculty and student requests, while simultaneously reaching out to engage faculty and students in order to shape the program effectively. The candidate should value community and bring a spirit of enthusiasm and energy as well as interdisciplinary expertise. This position starts September 1, 2018.


Responsibilities include:

  • Designing a FLES + Content program for the Lower School over the course of several years
  • Ensuring an immersive language experience within the language classroom
  • Contributing to a dynamic atmosphere in the Lower School, making certain that research, study, teaching, and learning grow alongside the language program
  • Working with the Head of the Lower School, the Head of Modern Language and the Director of technology to define the ways in which tech and research function within the classroom
  • Supervising any other Lower School language teacher as the program grows
  • Networking with Lower School faculty to locate ideal areas for collaboration
  • Assessing student performance and needs

Job Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in Elementary Language Pedagogy/FLES or equivalent
  • At least five years of in-classroom experience
  • Substantial experience in crafting a vision for a 21st century, elementary school language program
  • Demonstrated ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, plan and organize, coordinate, evaluate progress with data.
  • Dynamic bilingualism:  native or near-native fluency in all aspects of Spanish as well as fluency in all aspects of English
  • A strong set of communication skills and a desire to create collaborative opportunities with others.
  • Evidence of a forward-thinking, growth mindset regarding libraries of the present and future.
  • Joy and passion for working with Lower School students

Technology and Software Knowledge:

Microsoft Office, Classroom and LMS Software, social networking, web development, database design, digital content. Knowledge of coding a plus.
