Founded by two bold, visionary entrepreneurs in 1920–the same year that women won the right to vote­–The Nightingale-Bamford School gives girls from diverse backgrounds a rigorous college preparatory education. The school is widely recognized as one of the top girls’ schools in the country. There are currently 633 students enrolled in the school (Lower School 225; Middle School 195 and Upper School 213). Average class size is 12, student to faculty ratio is 6:1. The school is located on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, near many museums and Central Park. The Director of Alumnae Relations reports to the Director of Institutional Advancement and is responsible for the planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage the Nightingale-Bamford School’s alumnae and provide tangible benefits to graduates and current students. This position is an exciting opportunity to steward the school’s relationship with its nearly 2,300 alumnae, and to involve them in the life of their alma mater and its mission to inspire girls to go beyond barriers. As Nightingale approaches its centennial, the director of alumnae relations will help showcase our school-wide belief that Nightingale is a school for life.

The Director of Alumnae Relations is charged with securing commitments from alumnae to provide professional expertise and volunteer service; collaborating with colleagues in the administrative offices (including, but not limited to Head of School, Admissions, Advancement, Academic Heads and Deans) and the school to create and maintain pathways for alumnae participation that advance the goals of Nightingale; partnering with the Director and Associate Director of Annual Giving and the Director of Major Gifts to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward alumnae giving; and serving as a liaison between the Alumnae Board and the academic and administrative leadership.

The Director of Alumnae Relations will establish a program to engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward our parents of alumnae; a relatively untapped constituency.


  • Plan, implement and promote alumnae programs that support Nightingale’s strategic plan as well as the goals of the upcoming centennial in collaboration with colleagues within the Office of Advancement and throughout the school.
  • Establish and build strategic relationships with a wide range of alumnae, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; maintain regular communication with alumnae via direct contact, email blasts, alumnae web pages, and print publications.
  • Expand the alumnae panel program; bringing alumnae and upper school students together to share experiences and provide networking opportunities.
  • Develop a pipeline of candidates to the Alumnae Board nominating committee.
  • Work closely with the Alumnae Board, arranging its meetings, staffing its committees and ensuring strong and productive relationships between its members, the alumnae community, and administrative leadership.
  • Working with the Alumnae Board, develop a strategic alumnae engagement program that goes beyond reunions.
  • Grow alumnae participation in the Nightingale Fund and campaigns.
  • Ensure accurate and complete alumnae database records; capture contact, biographical and career information of alumnae via surveys, projects (e.g. alumnae directory), correspondence, website, postal returns, etc.
  • Educate graduating students about alumnae benefits and engage them in programs.
  • Partner with Director of Admissions to spearhead the introduction of alumnae involvement in the admissions process.
  • Collaborate closely with advancement colleagues in increasing support from alumnae; routinely identify and qualify alumnae prospects for major gifts to the school.
  • Develop and oversee the budget for Alumnae Relations; within the annual advancement budget, manage existing and/or additional alumnae programs, services and communications.
  • Work closely with the other members of the advancement team to ensure that all areas are working in a cohesive environment towards the goals of the school. Serve as an active member of the advancement leadership team.
  • Raise funds for select special projects and events in collaboration with Advancement colleagues
  • Provide guidance to alumnae volunteers.
  • Maintain alumnae section of the Nightingale website.
  • Provide all alumnae information to be used in the Blue Doors magazine and the annual report.


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Considerable experience in alumnae relations with demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the Nightingale’s community, alumnae, other constituents.
  • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
  • Extensive experience with Raiser's Edge or a similar constituent database.
  • Demonstrably strong communication skills; both oral and written.
