Interim Manager of Safety and Security

The Nightingale-Bamford School is seeking a temporary Interim Manager of Safety & Security to serve as a leave replacement on a short term basis. The Interim Manager of Safety and Security’s role is to plan, establish, and lead all activities related to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, employees, visitors, contractors, and all community members through collaboration with local government planners, public safety officials, law enforcement, first responders, municipal and governmental agencies, and school colleagues. This position requires a high degree of diplomacy, flexibility, adaptability, and a passionate commitment to the safety of students, colleagues, and visitors in a warm, caring, creative, and effective learning environment.  The Interim Manager should be a safety professional, patient, effective, and clear communicator with demonstrated problem-solving skills.

The schedule is based on a 40-hour work week. The work hours will be scheduled according to the school's needs, with the regular expected schedule of  2:00 p.m.– 10:00 p.m. on school days.

This is an exempt, temporary leave replacement role with an immediate start date. This position reports to the Director of Safety & Security / Director of Operations & Capital Management.

 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Enforce comprehensive safety and security policies and procedures, including emergency management and response, risk and accident prevention, visitor management, asset protection, fire prevention, and workplace safety.
  • Collaborate with School personnel to create a culture of safety by integrating safety, security and emergency preparedness measures into the School’s daily practices in a manner supportive of all individuals and departments.
  • Conduct safety, security and emergency preparedness training sessions for students and employees, coordinating with local law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Assisting with the oversight of the security officers’ team.
  • Cover the security management duties for special events and large school functions.
  • Conduct and maintain accurate records of required fire and safety drills.
  • Foster strong relationships with and serve as liaison to police, fire, medical and other public safety officials.
  • Conduct safety, security and emergency preparedness assessments of facilities.
  • Assure school safety compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Receive and review all reports of suspicious or criminal activity on school grounds; maintain statistics and conduct appropriate investigations. 
  • Coordinate with appropriate school personnel to ensure proper safety and security measures for outside programs that are held in the Schoolhouse.
  • Respond to all off-hours emergencies at the schoolhouse as needed (fire alarm, burglar alarm, etc) and provide reports to Head of School, Chief Financial & Operating Officer, Director of Operations & Capital Management, and Director of Safety & Security.
  • Perform duties as designated or requested by the Director of Safety & Security, Chief Financial & Operating Officer, and the Director of Operations & Capital Management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Fire & Life Safety Director certification issued by the FDNY (T-89 or F-89)
  • A current and valid New York State security guard license
  • At least 5 years of experience in the following areas:
    • Law Enforcement
    • Security (academic setting preferred)
    • Risk Management
    • Fire Service
    • Emergency Management
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to understand and process all required paperwork and to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability and willingness to work with all faculty and staff, particularly the school

Receptionist, Director of Operations & Capital Management, and Facilities Manager.

  • Technological adeptness and up-to-date knowledge of various security systems and software.
  • Awareness of the current trends, methods, and developments in school safety and security.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to lead in emergency and/or crisis situations.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and people management skills.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented problem-solver able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously in a high-pressure atmosphere; excellent communications skills a must.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to understand and process all required paperwork and to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sufficient stamina to perform all essential job functions for a normal eight-hour shift and up to a 16-hour shift in an emergency, with a meal break included in the shift.
  • Ability to walk the school property, climb stairs, and assist or carry a disabled, ill, or injured person.
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Sufficient strength and flexibility for stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, carrying, and other movements.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to understand and process all required paperwork and to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
